Luke 10:25-37
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live." 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30 Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, 34 and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, `Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" 37 He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

Food Poverty in NYC
Hunger is caused by food poverty, a lack of geographic and/or financial access to nutritious food. In New York City, one of the richest cities in the world, food poverty is around every corner. Throughout the five boroughs, approximately 1.4 million people — mainly women, children, seniors, the working poor and people with disabilities — rely on soup kitchens and food pantries. Approximately 2.6 million New Yorkers experience difficulty affording food for themselves and their families. http://www.foodbanknyc.org/

SNAP benefits can help you put healthy food on the table. SNAP monthly benefits can be used to purchase food at authorized retail food stores. SNAP benefits help low-income working people, seniors, the disabled and others feed their families. Benefits are provided through an electronic benefit card, similar to a debit or credit card. Eligibility and benefit levels are based on household size, income, expenses and other factors .http://otda.ny.gov/programs/snap/
SNAP has made it easier for many working households to apply and gain access to these critical nutrition supports. If you work hard but still struggle to make ends meet, you may be able to supplement your food budget through SNAP.
If you are eligible for or currently receive SNAP benefits, you may be interested in nutrition education. Visit Eat Smart New York to learn more about how to better feed your family with less money.
For more information about the Federal Administration of SNAP, visit: U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
ACCESS NYC is an online public screening tool that you can use to determine the City, State and Federal health and human service benefit programs for which you are potentially eligible to enroll.
You will need to answer a set of questions and a list of programs that you are eligible for will be provided. In addition to screening, you can learn about the programs, how to apply, where to go, and print filled-in applications.

For young adults, we provide a second chance to keep them off the streets and give them real purpose for the future, through such programs as the YAIP (Young Adult Internship) Program. Our Out of School Time afterschool programs provide a mix of academic, recreational and cultural activities for young people (grades K-12) after school, during holidays and in the summer, in a safe and supportive environment.
In addition, our Refugee Resettlement Program has helped those from around the world who have suffered political, religious or socio-economic oppression, including assistance in applying for Social Security cards and political asylum, ESL, employment assistance and medical check-ups.
These are just a few of the Family Services programs that serve the diverse communities of Brooklyn and Queens. Through all these venues, Catholic Charities offers families second chances to find real purpose for the future and enhance the quality of life.

SCO operates more than 90 programs at over 110 locations. We provide necessary services and unconditional care to more than 60,000 of New York’s most vulnerable people – from homeless families, to struggling teenagers and families at-risk to disabled adults. We produce life-changing results for individuals and families by focusing on safety, stability and mastery, building resilience, strengthening the capacity to make meaningful connections, function independently and become fully integrated into the community.
At the core of parish life are the words of Jesus: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25, 13)
We are aware that especially today there are so many in our community who struggle to keep their heads above water.
